Progress is a funny thing. Just when you think you are getting somewhere, some crazies throw up some hateful roadblock trying to set you back.
Wednesday was set to be LGBT recognition day in the State Senate. But when Democrats drafted a memorial recognizing LGBT New Mexicans and welcoming them to their own state capitol building, Senate Republicans threw a hissy fit and threatened to shut the whole Senate down.
Republicans Senator Bill Sharer threatened filibuster and his colleague Senator Bill Payne proposed creating a gay day “certificate” – nothing official, of course - instead. And that’s what they did.
Akin to a certificate of participation you give to runners up in the elementary school field day, Republicans demanded gays be treated differently than dozens of other groups already recognized.
New Mexico Republicans demanded second-class recognition for second-class citizens.
Let me be clear, I’m not second-class and neither are my LGBTQ friends and family.
Stop what you are doing and call and send a message to Senator Sharer and his Republican colleagues. Demand they recognize LGBTQ New Mexicans with more than just a second-class certificate of participation.
If we don't stand up, who will?
Sign the petition or call Sen. Sharer. Better yet: do both!
